 | About Us"Union Oak Church was established September 3, 1881 with the motto "If I can conceive it, and believe it, I can achieve it," when Mr. Ephraim McNair and his wife Carolina gave a section of their land to the church. Union Oak is in the Rockfish Township of Hope Mills. The first church, built in the 1880's, stood where the present building now stands. The second church stood in a grove of oak trees which corresponded to the name"Union Oak." In the late 1930's, Rev. L. J. Dockery initiated worship service every first and third Sunday. After a ground-breaking service in 1960, Mr. Howard Williams and Mr. Ben Campbell began the work of building a new church. A Fellowship Hall was added in 1972, under Rev. C. T. Williams. In 1974 Union Oak became a station church. Many renovations were made in the late 1970's, including adding a steeple, paving the parking lot and bricking the church building. Physical improvements continued in the 1980's when a church annex was added and a stove and copy machine were purchased. During the 1990's church membership has grown dramatically. Several pastors have worked successfully to restore the spiritual unity of the church, as well as making more additions and improvements. In 1996 The Progressive Women's Club was formed, The Howard Williams Sunday School Attendance Day was established, and Hurricane Fran knocked down the steeple, which was then replaced in 1997. At the annual conference in 1997 Rev. Chauncey L. McDonald received the charge for Union Oak A.M.E. Zion Church." |
